Anxiety and Depression

Anxiety and depression are becoming more and more common in this day and age and a big part of this may not only be due to the current pandemic but also the increased use of Social Media – particularly in the younger generations Teens, 20’s and 30’s.

So how is this connected to sympathetic wind-up?

If you think of someone that is on edge, their heart rate and sweat response are up, blood pressure is high and their body is primed for attack, but no attack ever comes. Eventually, they become anxious, anxious waiting for the attack, then depression may follow due to the feeling of anxiety and linked to the body being locked in a state of sympathetic wind up (fight or flight mode).

Serotonin is our feel-good hormone and 90%, YES 90% of serotonin is produced in our gut and just 10% in our brain! So if our gut is suppressed the production of serotonin may be too.

What can I do?

Getting your digestive system in tip-top shape may help improve your anxiety and help to create more of the happy hormone, serotonin.

The first thing to look at is the foods that you eat, we want to try to consume slow-releasing healthy carbohydrates, whole foods, fresh fruit and veg and minimising the intake of processed foods.

You could get an IgG food sensitivity blood test to help assess what foods may be leaking through your gut lining, which may increase inflammation and decrease the functioning of your digestive system, which again may reduce your production of serotonin.

Bone broth is a fantastic way to help heal your gut lining. It’s jam-packed with all the nutrients needed to assist in healing your gut, this could also boost your serotonin production – Happy gut, happy brain! We have a simple and yummy recipe here and also a recommendation should you prefer to purchase the broth.

Other factors

Anxiety and Depression aren’t always just emotionally based. It could be physically and chemically too…if you are hunched over with rounded shoulders, you have a forward head posture – your body may think it is in flight mode and again waiting for attack.

If you are putting chemicals in your body such as herbicides, pesticides and toxins that don’t agree with you, then as we mentioned above, it can suppress your digestive system – again keeping your body in a state of fight or flight.
